Scientific Update

Scientific Update are returning to Chemspec Europe in 2012 to host a series of technical workshops in a purpose built theatre directly on the show floor.
Scientific Update, established in 1989 by Dr. Trevor Laird, organises conferences and training courses for industrial chemists, chemical engineers in chemical development and scale-up and many other specialist topics in organic chemistry.
This year's topics will include:
Wednesday 13 June, 11.00-12.00
Drug Candidate Synthesis
• Surveys the range and frequency of reaction types used to prepare drug candidates
• Discusses how chirality and key heterocyclic synthons are most often accessed
• Examines some of the constraints faced by pharmaceutical development chemists
• Highlights current gaps in the process chemist's synthetic armoury
Wednesday 13 June, 15.30-16.30
Catalysis
For efficient and green manufacture, a well designed catalytic process is essential. This workshop will discuss some case studies of processes looking at issues such as catalyst cost, IP, turnover number and frequency, separation and recycle of catalyst. For many catalytic systems the active catalyst is generated "in situ" and the implications of this for turnover, catalyst removal and recycle will be discussed.
Thursday 14 June, 11.00-12.00
Maximising profits through process improvement
In many pharmaceutical companies, a primary aim of the process chemistry department is to get regulatory approval for a drug manufacturing process and to transfer the process successfully to manufacturing. While economic viability is an important requirement, many companies move forward sub-optimal processes which are undoubtedly commercially viable, but which are not necessarily optimised for maximum commercial return.
This presentation and discussion uses case studies to explore the different strategies and tactics employed in the industry to maximise the value which excellent process chemistry can bring to the industry.
